October is Walk to School Month

October is International Walk to School Month and Wednesday, October 9th is Walk to School Day.

Exercise before school has been proven to improve a child’s ability to learn and increase physical fitness.

John Stanford was one of the first five schools to sign up for Walk to School Month with Safe Routes to School and has received a free Walking School Bus pack from Feet First! The kit contains three high-visibility backpacks, three Ouch Pouches from Group Health, and a bunch of fun signs for the kids to hold.

Do you already walk to school in a group? Make it official and claim your Walking School Bus swag! Come find Madi at the big pink bike in the upper playground at drop-off or pick-up time.

See the Walking School Bus site for tips on starting a walking school bus. Connect with other families in person en route to school or in the comments section of this page.

Watch this website and E-News for more information about Walk to School Day and in the meantime, pledge to walk to school more often. Some drivers like to intentionally park a few blocks away from school to emulate a car-free school zone–and reap the benefits of the healthy walk to school.
